HISTORY OF THE GOLDFIELD BORDELLO
Although
the original town of Goldfield back in the 1890's had houses
of women operating, it has been very difficult to know who
worked them. When the Schoose family and their partners
started to rebuild the town of Goldfield in the late 1980's,
while on a road trip through Idaho it was decided that they
would build a Bordello Museum.
The Bordello is named after Lu Ann who is the owner.
We just
call her "Madam LuLu". Over the years many women have worked
giving tours into the Bordello. Adds were placed in the
local newspapers for "Floozies Wanted for the Bordello
Museum at Goldfield Ghost Town."
Many answered the adds only a select few have made the cut.
Since 2001 the tours of the Bordello have changed. What
started out to be a simple tour for $2.00 now is filled with
information about all the different type of women who made
the journey into the western territory. Their experience and
obstacles they had to endure to settle into the boom towns
and the choices they were allotted just to survive.
The tour guides, "floozies", are instructed to be factual as
well as keeping their vocabulary very professional so as not
to offend any one.
A variety of families and children have enjoyed their visit
to Lu Lu's Bordello Museum. Stating that it was the best
view of the women of the western territory that they have
ever heard. Many leave not only with a smile and a bunch of
pictures to share their memories with others but also a
different perspective into the history of the west and also
how they perceive their life today.
